GEnder lexicon

In the context of the EQUALS-EU project, we recognize the
importance of tailoring our lexicon to the linguistic and
cultural nuances of each participating country. To achieve
this, our consortium partners have made language-specific
contributions to the lexicon, ensuring that the terminology
and definitions align seamlessly with the national languages
and contextual understandings of the respective regions.
Although the survey tools were presented in English, the UK
partner incorporated context-specific approaches in how they
engage with these terminologies.Below, we present the English
contributions that enrich our lexicon, reflecting the diverse
and inclusive approach to data collection for our project.
Diversity
Diversity refers to recognising and respecting and valuing differences in people.
Equality
Providing equal opportunities to everyone and protecting people from being
discriminated against.
Gender
Gender identity is your own, internal, personal sense of being a man or
a woman (or non-binary, as someone outside of that gender). Transgender
or Trans is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or
expression is different from cultural expectations based on the sex they
were assigned at birth.
Gender Equity
Equity is giving everyone what they need to be successful compared to equality
where everyone is treated the same.
Inclusion
Social inclusion is about enabling people or communities to fully
participate in society and improving the ability and opportunity for
those typically excluded on the basis of their identity.
Mainstreaming
Mainstreaming is the act or process of normalising something: such as mainstreaming women
in leadership positions, as a normal and accepted trend.
Marginalisation
Marginalisation is the process of rendering someone powerless, making them feel unimportant
and not in a position to influence situations or events.
Sex
Refers to biological sex - the objectively measurable organs, hormones and chromosomes.
Sustainability
Sustainability is aligned with Agenda 2030, and in addition to driving sustainability initiatives,
our UK partner is actively working to integrate sustainability into its own operations.
